📝 Instructions

11 steps
1

In a small saucepan over medium heat, warm the milk until it’s hot but not boiling. Remove from heat and stir in the butter, sugar, and salt until the butter is melted. Let the mixture cool to lukewarm.

2

In a small bowl, combine the warm water and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes or until the mixture becomes foamy.

3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the lukewarm milk mixture and the yeast mixture. Beat in the egg.

4

Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing with a wooden spoon or dough hook until a soft dough forms. If the dough is sticky, add a small amount of flour (1 tablespoon at a time) until it’s smooth.

5

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, knead with a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook for 5-7 minutes.

6

Place the dough in a large, greased bowl. Cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

7

Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. To make rolls, divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each into a ball. Place the balls onto a greased baking sheet or in a greased 9x13-inch pan. For a loaf, shape the dough into a loaf and place it in a greased loaf pan.

8

Cover the shaped dough with a clean cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 30 minutes.

9

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

10

Bake rolls for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown, or bake the loaf for 25-30 minutes. The bread is done when it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

11

Remove from the oven and immediately brush the tops with melted butter for a soft, shiny finish. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
