Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) if you plan to bake immediately.
In a large skillet, melt 6 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the diced yellow onion and sauté until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream of chicken soup, sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Stir well to create a creamy mixture.
