📝 Instructions

9 steps
1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) if you plan to bake immediately.

2

In a large skillet, melt 6 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the diced yellow onion and sauté until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat.

3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cream of chicken soup, sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Stir well to create a creamy mixture.

4

Add the sautéed onions and frozen hash browns to the mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly until the hash browns are evenly coated with the creamy mixture.

5

Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray. Transfer the hash brown mixture to the dish and spread it out evenly.

6

If using the cornflake topping, combine the crushed cornflakes and 4 tablespoons of melted butter in a small bowl. Sprinkle the mixture evenly over the top of the hash brown casserole.

7

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil if preparing ahead. Store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours before baking.

8

When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) if it isn't already preheated. Remove the foil from the dish. Bake for 45-60 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the casserole is bubbling around the edges.

9

Let cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
