Bring 4 quarts of water to a boil in a large pot. Add 1 tablespoon of salt to the boiling water.
Trim the tough ends off the asparagus and cut the spears into 2-inch pieces.
Add the linguini to the boiling water and cook according to package directions until al dente, typically 9–11 minutes.
About 3 minutes before the linguini is done, add the asparagus to the pot to cook alongside the pasta.
While the pasta and asparagus cook, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add the minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for about 30 seconds, or until fragrant.
Stir in the prosciutto slices and cook for 1–2 minutes until they begin to crisp slightly.
Reserve 1 cup of the pasta cooking water, then drain the linguini and asparagus.
Lower the heat to medium-low and add the drained pasta and asparagus to the skillet with the prosciutto.
Stir in 2 tablespoons of butter and 1/2 cup of the reserved pasta water. Toss to coat everything evenly, adding more pasta water if the mixture looks dry.
Season with 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper, adjusting to taste.
Sprinkle in the grated Parmesan cheese and toss again until the cheese melts and coats the pasta.
Garnish with freshly chopped parsley and serve warm.
