Indulge in the buttery, flaky goodness of **Chausson aux Pommes**, a classic French apple turnover that's perfect for breakfast, dessert, or an anytime snack. Featuring tender puff pastry pockets filled with a luscious apple compote made from fresh apples, cinnamon, vanilla, and a hint of lemon, these hand-held treats are both comforting and elegant. The pastry is sealed and brushed with a golden egg wash, giving it a beautiful sheen and irresistible crispness. With just 30 minutes of prep and 25 minutes of baking, this recipe is an easy way to bring a touch of French pΓ’tisserie into your own kitchen. Serve these turnovers warm with a dusting of powdered sugar or alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the ultimate indulgence.
Peel, core, and dice the apples into small cubes.
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced apples, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, and vanilla extract.
Cook the apple mixture for about 10 minutes or until the apples are soft and the mixture is fragrant. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
Once fully cooked, allow the apple filling to cool completely. Optionally, mash it slightly to achieve your desired consistency.
Preheat your oven to 180Β°C (350Β°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheets if they are not pre-rolled to a thickness of about 3mm.
Cut the pastry into 6-8 squares or circles, about 12cm in diameter each.
Place a generous spoonful of the cooled apple mixture in the center of each pastry piece, leaving enough room around the edges to seal.
Fold the pastry over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Seal the edges by pressing them together with the tines of a fork.
Whisk the egg with a tablespoon of water to make an egg wash and brush it over each pastry. This will give them a golden sheen when baked.
Place the pastries on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until puffed and golden brown.
Allow to cool slightly before serving. Best enjoyed warm or at room temperature.
