Master the art of perfect homemade "Whole Wheat Chapati" with this simple and wholesome recipe! Crafted from just four pantry staples—nutritious whole wheat flour, water, salt, and a touch of vegetable oil—these soft, golden flatbreads come together in under 40 minutes. The kneading technique ensures the dough is smooth and pliable, while resting allows it to develop a perfect elasticity for easy rolling. Cooked on a hot skillet, each chapati puffs beautifully, creating light, airy layers that make it irresistible. These traditional Indian flatbreads are ideal for scooping up creamy curries, pairing with hearty dals, or even enjoying as a wrap with your favorite fillings. Naturally vegan and packed with fiber, homemade chapati is a healthy, versatile addition to any meal.
In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of whole wheat flour and 0.5 teaspoons of salt.
Gradually add 0.75 cups of water and mix to form a soft dough. You may need a little more or less water depending on the flour.
Once the mixture starts coming together, add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil to the dough.
Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for at least 15 minutes.
Divide the rested dough into 8 equal portions and roll each portion into a small ball.
Flatten one ball and dust it lightly with flour.
Using a rolling pin, roll each ball into a circle about 6-7 inches in diameter and as thin as possible.
Heat a skillet or tava over medium-high heat.
Place the rolled chapati on the hot skillet.
Cook for about 30-40 seconds until small bubbles form on the surface.
Flip the chapati using tongs or a spatula and cook for another 30-40 seconds, pressing down with a cloth or spatula to encourage puffing.
Flip it again and cook for a few more seconds until it puffs up completely and is lightly golden on both sides.
Remove from the skillet and keep warm. Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls.
Serve warm with your favorite curry or dhal.
