Crispy, golden, and absolutely irresistible, these Whole30 Tostones are a mouthwatering twist on a classic Latin American side dish. Made with just four simple ingredients—green plantains, coconut oil, sea salt, and water—this Whole30-compliant recipe is perfect for anyone seeking a paleo-friendly snack or appetizer. The plantains are twice-fried to perfection, creating a crunchy exterior with a soft, tender center. Dipping them briefly in salted water between fries enhances their flavor while keeping them moist and delicious. Serve these versatile tostones as a savory side, pair them with your favorite dips, or use them as a base for loaded toppings that fit your Whole30 journey. With a quick prep time of just 10 minutes, they’ll soon become your go-to snack for healthy indulgence!
Peel the green plantains by cutting off the ends and making a shallow vertical slit through the skin. Gently use your fingers or a knife to remove the tough outer peel.
Slice the plantains into 1-inch thick rounds and set aside.
Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the coconut oil. Once the oil is hot, but not smoking, carefully add the plantain rounds in a single layer, working in batches if necessary.
Fry the plantain rounds for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until they turn a light golden color. Remove them from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
Using the flat side of a plate, a tostones press, or the back of a spatula, gently flatten each fried plantain round to about 1/4 inch thick.
Prepare a small bowl with filtered water and dissolve the sea salt in it. Dip each flattened plantain briefly into the salted water, then pat them dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
Return the flattened plantains to the skillet with the hot oil and fry a second time for 2-3 minutes per side, or until they are crispy and golden brown.
Remove the tostones from the skillet, drain on paper towels, and sprinkle with additional sea salt to taste (optional). Serve warm and enjoy!
