Discover the nostalgic charm of Irish Tea Bread, a classic treat brimming with rich flavor and simple authenticity. This traditional loaf combines the sweetness of soaked raisins and sultanas with the warmth of dark brown sugar and aromatic mixed spice, all infused with robust black tea for a moist and tender crumb. With just 20 minutes of prep time, this no-yeast bread is perfect for beginners yet yields bakery-quality results. Baked until golden and lightly spiced, itβs the ultimate pairing for your afternoon tea or a cozy breakfast. Serve it sliced and buttered for an indulgent experience that showcases the timeless flavors of Ireland.
Brew the strong black tea and pour it over the mixed dried fruits (raisins and sultanas) in a heatproof bowl. Cover the bowl and let the fruits soak in the tea for at least 4 hours or preferably overnight.
Preheat your oven to 170Β°C (150Β°C fan) or 340Β°F. Grease and line a 2lb loaf tin with butter and parchment paper.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the soaked fruits and any remaining tea, dark brown sugar, and mixed spice. Stir well to evenly distribute the ingredients.
Add the self-raising flour to the bowl and mix until just combined.
Beat the egg lightly in a separate small bowl and stir it into the mixture, ensuring the batter is fully incorporated.
Pour the batter into the prepared loaf tin, smoothing the top with the back of a spoon.
Bake the tea bread in the preheated oven for 1 hour and 30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
Once baked, remove the loaf tin from the oven and let the bread cool in the tin for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
Slice and serve the Irish Tea Bread with butter, if desired. Enjoy with a hot cup of tea!
