Perfect for family gatherings or special occasions, this dish is a soul-soothing masterpiece that will become a cherished tradition at your table.
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 4-5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
Add the ground beef and pork sausage to the skillet. Cook until browned and cooked through, breaking it up into small pieces with a spatula. Drain any excess fat.
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, water, sugar, dried basil, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Reduce heat to low, cover, and let the sauce simmer for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
While the sauce simmers, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the lasagna noodles according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and lay the noodles flat on a clean kitchen towel.
In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and 1/4 cup of grated Parmesan cheese. Mix until smooth and set aside.
Spread 1 cup of the meat sauce onto the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish.
Layer 3 lasagna noodles over the meat sauce, slightly overlapping. Spread one-third of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by 1 cup of shredded mozzarella and 1/4 cup of grated Parmesan.
Repeat the layering process two more times, ending with a final layer of meat sauce and the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses on top.
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil, making sure it doesn’t touch the cheese, and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and bubbling.
Remove the lasagna from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes before slicing and serving.
