📝 Instructions

9 steps
1

In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium-low heat until warm but not scalding (about 110°F/43°C). Remove from heat and stir in 2 tablespoons of the sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the milk and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter, eggs, remaining sugar, and cardamom. Stir in the milk and yeast mixture.

3

Gradually add the flour and salt to the wet ingredients, about 1/2 cup at a time, mixing until a dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.

4

Place the dough into a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until the dough doubles in size.

5

After the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into three equal portions. Roll each portion into a long rope, about 16 inches in length. Place the three ropes side by side on a parchment-lined baking sheet and braid them together, pinching the ends to seal.

6

Cover the braided loaf with a kitchen towel and let it rise again for 30-45 minutes, until puffy.

7

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Beat the egg for the egg wash and gently brush it over the loaf. Sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.

8

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

9

Remove the loaf from the oven and allow it to cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving. Enjoy with coffee or tea!
