In a small saucepan over medium heat, warm the milk and butter until the butter is melted. Remove from heat and stir in the granulated sugar. Let cool until lukewarm (about 110°F).
In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
In a large bowl, combine the lukewarm milk mixture, yeast mixture, eggs, 4 cups of flour, and salt. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, adding the remaining 1/2 cup of flour if needed, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
While the dough is rising, make the caramel glaze by combining 4 tablespoons of butter, 1/4 cup of heavy cream, 2 tablespoons of corn syrup, and 1/2 cup of brown sugar in a small saucepan.
