Preheat your campfire or charcoal grill until you have a steady, medium heat.
Spray the inside of your pie iron with non-stick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
Spread a thin layer of butter on one side of a slice of bread. Place the buttered side down into one side of the pie iron.
Spoon 2 to 3 tablespoons of your chosen filling or spread into the center of the bread. Be careful not to overfill, as it may spill out during cooking.
Butter another slice of bread on one side and place it, buttered side up, on top of the filling to create a sandwich.
Close the pie iron firmly and latch it shut. Trim off any excess bread hanging out of the edges if necessary.
Carefully place the pie iron in the fire or over the grill, resting it on hot coals or holding it just above the flames. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes on each side, checking occasionally for doneness.
Once the bread is golden brown and crispy, carefully remove the pie iron from the fire and open it. Allow the camping pie to cool slightly before removing and serving.
Repeat the process with the remaining ingredients to make additional pies. Customize fillings for variety!
