These homemade hot cross buns are a must-have for Easter brunch or any special occasion, offering a warm, comforting treat thatβs aromatic, tender, and beautifully spiced.
Add the milk and butter to a small saucepan. Heat over low heat until the butter is melted and the mixture is warm (about 110Β°F).
Pour the milk-butter mixture into the bread machine pan.
Add the egg, flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt to the bread machine pan, layering them as per your machine manufacturer's instructions.
Sprinkle the yeast on top of the dry ingredients.
Place the bread machine pan into the machine and select the 'Dough' cycle. Press βStartβ.
When the machine beeps during the first knead (or after 5 minutes of mixing), add the raisins to the dough.
Once the Dough cycle is complete, remove the dough from the machine and place it on a lightly floured surface.
Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and shape each into a smooth ball.
Place the balls onto a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them about 1 inch apart.
Cover the buns with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise in a warm place for 30-40 minutes, until doubled in size.
Preheat your oven to 375Β°F (190Β°C).
Bake the buns for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown on top. Remove from the oven and let them cool completely on a wire rack.
To make the icing, mix powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and water in a small bowl until smooth. Transfer to a piping bag or a resealable plastic bag with the corner cut off.
Pipe a cross on the top of each bun to finish.
