πŸ“ Instructions

9 steps
1

Start by preparing the artichokes. Using a sharp knife, trim about 1 inch off the tops of the artichokes to remove the spiky tips. Use scissors to snip the sharp tips of any remaining leaves.

2

Peel the stem of the artichokes to remove the tough outer layer, then cut off the bottom 1/2 inch of the stem.

3

Cut the lemon in half. Rub the cut sides of the artichokes with one half of the lemon to prevent browning. Slice the other half into thin rounds and set aside.

4

In a large pot with a steamer insert (or a pot with a metal colander), add the water, sliced lemons, smashed garlic cloves, bay leaf, and 1 teaspoon of salt.

5

Place the artichokes stem-side up in the steamer insert or colander. Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid.

6

Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to low and let the artichokes steam for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the leaves pull away easily and the base is tender when pierced with a knife.

7

For the optional dipping butter, melt the butter in a small bowl and stir in a pinch of salt, if desired.

8

Once cooked, remove the artichokes from the pot and allow them to cool for a few minutes.

9

Serve the artichokes warm with the dipping butter or sauce of your choice.
