📝 Instructions

13 steps
1

Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans, then line the bottoms with parchment paper.

2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

3

In another bowl, whisk together the sourdough starter, milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.

4

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing just until combined.

5

Stir in the cooled brewed coffee. The batter will be slightly thin, which is normal.

6

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.

7

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cakes comes out clean.

8

Remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

9

Meanwhile, prepare the mocha frosting. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.

10

Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, beating until smooth.

11

Add the espresso or strong brewed coffee and vanilla extract, then mix until the frosting is light and fluffy.

12

Once the cakes are completely cooled, spread a layer of frosting over the top of one cake layer. Place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.

13

Decorate as desired, slice, and serve. Enjoy your Sourdough Chocolate Cake with Mocha Frosting!
