📝 Instructions

9 steps
1

Rinse the pickled cabbage leaves under cold running water to reduce the saltiness. Set them aside to drain.

2

In a large mixing bowl, combine ground pork, ground beef, rice, onion, garlic, paprika, salt, black pepper, and egg. Mix thoroughly to form a uniform filling.

3

Take one cabbage leaf, trim the thick stem if necessary, and place a small handful of the meat mixture in the center of the leaf. Roll the leaf tightly, tucking in the sides to create a sealed roll. Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.

4

In a large, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven, heat vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped bacon and cook until slightly crisp. Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 1-2 minutes to deepen the flavor.

5

Spread a layer of shredded sauerkraut on the bottom of the pot. Place the cabbage rolls seam-side down on top of the sauerkraut layer, arranging them snugly.

6

Add another layer of shredded sauerkraut on top of the rolls. Pour chicken or beef stock over everything to just cover the rolls. Add bay leaves.

7

Bring the pot to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and cook for approximately 2 hours, occasionally checking to ensure the liquid level remains sufficient (add a bit more stock or water if needed).

8

Once cooked, remove from heat and let the rolls rest for 10 minutes before serving.

9

Serve the Sarma warm with a side of mashed potatoes or crusty bread. Enjoy!
