Warm, hearty, and packed with flavor, Lebanese Syrian Bazella is a traditional Middle Eastern stew that's perfect for cozy family meals. This comforting dish combines tender cubes of beef or lamb simmered in a rich tomato-based sauce, infused with aromatic spices like allspice and cinnamon for an authentic Mediterranean touch. Sweet green peas add a burst of freshness, while a simple garnish of parsley elevates its vibrant flavors. Quick to prepare and slow-cooked to perfection, this one-pot wonder is a nourishing meal that pairs beautifully with fluffy rice or crusty bread. Ideal for weeknights or special occasions, Bazella is a timeless recipe that brings the warmth of Lebanese and Syrian kitchens straight to your table.
Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
Add the cubed beef or lamb to the pot and brown on all sides, about 5–7 minutes. Remove and set aside.
In the same pot, add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
Add the tomato paste to the pot and stir well, cooking for 1–2 minutes to deepen its flavor.
Return the browned meat to the pot and stir to combine.
Pour in the canned diced tomatoes and water (or beef stock). Stir well and bring the mixture to a boil.
Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 40 minutes, or until the meat is tender.
Add the frozen green peas to the pot and stir in the allspice, cinnamon, black pepper, and salt.
Cover again and cook for another 10 minutes, or until the peas are tender and the flavors have melded together.
Taste and adjust seasonings as desired.
Garnish with fresh chopped parsley, if desired, and serve hot with a side of rice or crusty bread.
