Preheat your oven to 375Β°F (190Β°C).
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, chopped onion, salt, black pepper, and dried oregano. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.
Shape the mixture into 1-inch meatballs and set aside.
Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the olive oil. Once hot, add the meatballs in batches and brown them on all sides. They do not need to be cooked through at this stage, as they will finish cooking in the casserole.
If using pasta, cook it according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
In a large casserole dish, spread 1 cup of marinara sauce along the bottom. If using pasta, layer the cooked pasta evenly over the sauce.
Arrange the browned meatballs over the sauce (and pasta, if used). Pour the remaining marinara sauce over the meatballs, ensuring they are fully coated.
Top the casserole evenly with shredded mozzarella cheese.
Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is fully melted and bubbly.
Remove the casserole from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh chopped basil, if desired, before serving.
