📝 Instructions

10 steps
1

Preheat the oven to 180°C (356°F).

2

Peel the potatoes and cut them into evenly sized chunks. Boil in salted water until tender, about 20 minutes.

3

While the potatoes are cooking, heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Slice the onions into thin rings and sauté them in the butter until soft and caramelized, about 15 minutes. Remove half of the onions and set aside.

4

In the same skillet with the remaining onions, add the beef. If using raw meat, sear it on all sides. Then, pour in the beef stock, add the bay leaves, and season with salt and pepper. Let it simmer gently for 20-25 minutes until the meat is tender. If using leftover cooked beef, simply break it into smaller pieces and warm it in the stock.

5

Once the potatoes are cooked, drain them and mash them with the milk, a pinch of nutmeg, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy.

6

To assemble the casserole, spread the meat and onion mixture across the bottom of a greased baking dish. Layer the reserved caramelized onions on top of the meat.

7

Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the onion layer, making sure the surface is smooth.

8

Sprinkle breadcrumbs over the mashed potatoes for a crispy topping.

9

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the casserole is bubbling at the edges.

10

Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy this hearty Jachtschotel with a side of steamed vegetables or a crisp green salad.
