Preheat your oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch cake pans, or line them with parchment paper.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
In a large bowl, beat the butter and granulated sugar together with a hand or stand mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk to the wet mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until fully combined but do not overmix.
Divide the batter equally into three bowls. Leave one bowl as is for the white layer. Add red gel food coloring to the second bowl and blue gel food coloring to the third bowl until vibrant colors are achieved.
Pour each batter into its prepared cake pan and smooth the tops with a spatula.
Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
While the cakes cool, prepare the frosting. In a large bowl, beat butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, one cup at a time, while mixing on low speed.
Add heavy cream, one tablespoon at a time, until your desired consistency is reached. Increase to medium-high speed and beat for 2-3 minutes until fluffy. If desired, tint portions of the frosting with additional gel food coloring for decoration.
Once the cakes have cooled, level the tops with a serrated knife if needed. Place the blue layer on a cake stand and spread an even layer of frosting on top. Repeat with the white layer and then the red layer. Frost the entire outside of the cake with a crumb coat and allow it to set in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
Apply a final layer of frosting, smoothing with an offset spatula. Use any reserved colored frosting to pipe fireworks designs, stars, or swirls on the top and sides of the cake.
Finish the cake by sprinkling edible glitter or sprinkles over your designs to mimic sparkling fireworks.
Chill the cake for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the frosting to set. Slice and enjoy your Fantastic Fireworks 4th of July Cake!
