Preheat your grill or oven to 375°F (190°C).
Remove any giblets from the inside of the chicken and pat the chicken dry with paper towels.
Rub the outside of the chicken with olive oil, ensuring it's evenly coated for crisping.
In a small bowl, mix together the salt, black pepper, garlic powder, smoked paprika, dried thyme, onion powder, and brown sugar.
Evenly rub this spice mixture all over the chicken, including under the skin if possible, for maximum flavor.
Open the can of beer and pour out (or drink!) about half of it. Add the crushed garlic cloves and optional lemon half into the beer can for added aroma.
Carefully lower the chicken onto the beer can so the can fits snugly into the cavity. The chicken should sit upright with the beer can as its base.
If using a grill, place the chicken standing upright on the cooler side of the grill (indirect heat). If using an oven, position it upright in the center of a baking dish.
Roast the chicken for about 90 minutes or until the internal temperature of the thickest part of the chicken (thigh) reads 165°F (74°C). Rotate the chicken occasionally for even browning if necessary.
Carefully remove the chicken from the oven or grill and let it rest for 10-15 minutes before attempting to remove the beer can and carve.
Serve the chicken hot with your favorite sides such as roasted vegetables, corn on the cob, or creamy coleslaw.
