Perfect for holiday gatherings or weeknight dinners, this classic recipe is ready in just 45 minutes and pairs beautifully with hearty mains like roasted chicken or pot roast. Serve warm and prepare to savor every bite of this down-home favorite!
Wash and trim the green beans by snapping off the ends.
Dice the bacon into small pieces and set aside.
Peel and finely chop the onion and garlic.
In a large skillet or Dutch oven, cook the diced bacon over medium heat until crispy, about 7–8 minutes. Remove the bacon pieces with a slotted spoon and set them aside, leaving the rendered fat in the pan.
Add the chopped onion to the skillet and sauté in the bacon fat until softened, about 3–4 minutes.
Stir in the garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
Add the green beans to the skillet, stirring to coat them evenly in the onion, garlic, and bacon fat mixture.
Pour in the chicken broth and add the butter, salt, black pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes. Stir to combine.
Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and cover the skillet. Cook for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the green beans are tender and most of the liquid has reduced.
Once cooked, toss the crispy bacon back into the skillet and stir to combine.
Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Serve warm as a side dish.
