πŸ“ Instructions

14 steps
1

Preheat the oven to 350Β°F (175Β°C) and grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans. Set aside.

2

In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

3

In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar together using an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.

4

Add the eggs one at a time to the butter mixture, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.

5

Alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk to the wet ingredients, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix just until combined; do not overmix.

6

In a small bowl, stir together the cocoa powder and hot water until smooth. Transfer half of the cake batter to another bowl and fold in the cocoa mixture to create the chocolate batter.

7

To create the ribbon effect, spoon alternating dollops of vanilla and chocolate batter into the prepared pans. Swirl the two batters gently using a knife to create a marbled design.

8

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

9

Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

10

Once the cakes are cool, level the tops if necessary to create even layers.

11

Place the first cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand. Spread an even layer of chocolate frosting on top.

12

Place the second cake layer on top and spread an even layer of vanilla frosting.

13

Repeat with the remaining cake layer, alternating the frosting flavors. Frost the entire outside of the cake with a mix of vanilla and chocolate frosting, or decorate as preferred.

14

Chill the cake for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the layers to set. Slice and serve!
