Delight your senses with Boulou Sweet French Tunisian Rolls, a unique fusion of North African flavors and European baking traditions. These soft and slightly sweet rolls are infused with aromatic ground anise, zesty orange, and a hint of vanilla, delivering a warm, citrusy fragrance in every bite. Raisins add an optional touch of chewiness, while a golden egg wash gives these pastries their irresistible shine. Perfectly balanced between tender crumb and subtle sweetness, these easy-to-make rolls are ideal for breakfast, tea-time treats, or as a versatile snack. With just 30 minutes of prep time and simple ingredients like all-purpose flour, butter, and fresh orange juice, Boulou Rolls offer a quick and delightful way to elevate your baking repertoire. Serve them warm or at room temperature for a taste of traditional Tunisian comfort.
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and ground anise seed.
Cut the butter into small cubes and rub it into the flour mixture using your fingers or a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, orange zest, orange juice, and vanilla extract.
Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the wet ingredients. Mix gently with a spatula until the dough starts to come together.
If using raisins, fold them in at this stage.
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead it gently for 1-2 minutes until smooth. Do not overwork the dough.
Divide the dough into 10 equal portions. Shape each portion into a small roll and place them on the prepared baking tray, leaving some space between each roll.
In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to create the egg wash. Brush the top of each roll with the egg wash for a shiny and golden finish.
Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown and cooked through. You can test doneness by inserting a toothpick into a roll; it should come out clean.
Allow the rolls to cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes before serving. They are best enjoyed slightly warm or at room temperature.
Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze for longer storage.
