Rinse the yellow split peas under cold water until the water runs clear. Set aside.
In a medium pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
Dice the yellow onion and mince the garlic cloves. Add them to the pot and sauté for 3-4 minutes, or until the onion is softened and translucent.
Stir in the turmeric and ground cumin, cooking for 1 minute to toast the spices.
Add the rinsed yellow split peas and water to the pot. Stir well and bring the mixture to a boil.
Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Let the peas simmer for 30-35 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are very soft and beginning to break apart.
Remove the pot from heat and add the salt, black pepper, and lemon juice. Use an immersion blender to purée the mixture until smooth. If you don't have an immersion blender, transfer the mixture to a countertop blender in batches and blend carefully.
Taste the purée and adjust seasoning with more salt, pepper, or lemon juice if needed.
Serve warm as a side dish or spread. Optionally, garnish with fresh parsley for a pop of color and added flavor.
