πŸ“ Instructions

10 steps
1

Preheat your oven to 180Β°C (350Β°F).

2

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, and sautΓ© until softened and fragrant, about 5 minutes.

3

Add the ground beef or lamb to the skillet, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned and fully cooked through, about 8–10 minutes.

4

In a small bowl, soak the slices of white bread in 250 ml of milk. Once softened, squeeze out the excess milk and crumble the bread into the meat mixture. Reserve the remaining milk for the custard.

5

Stir in the curry powder, turmeric, brown sugar, grated apple, lemon juice, raisins, and chutney. Cook for another 3–5 minutes to combine the flavors.

6

Season the mixture with salt and black pepper. Transfer the meat mixture to a greased baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

7

In another bowl, whisk the eggs with the reserved milk (about 125 ml). Pour this mixture over the beef mixture in the baking dish to form the custard topping.

8

Gently press the bay leaves into the custard topping for flavor.

9

Bake the Bobotie in the preheated oven for 35–40 minutes, or until the custard is set and golden brown on top.

10

Remove from the oven, discard the bay leaves, and let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Serve warm with yellow rice or a side salad.
