Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Line two baking trays with parchment paper or grease lightly.
In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt.
In a separate bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, using a hand mixer or wooden spoon.
Beat in the egg until fully incorporated, followed by the sweet wine.
