πŸ“ Instructions

10 steps
1

In a small bowl, combine the saffron threads and 2 tablespoons of warm water. Let the saffron steep for 10 minutes to release its color and flavor.

2

In a small saucepan, heat the milk over low heat until warm (about 100–110Β°F/38–43Β°C). Remove from heat and stir in the sugar until dissolved. Sprinkle the yeast over the milk mixture and let sit for 5–10 minutes, or until foamy.

3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the saffron mixture, yeast mixture, softened butter, and eggs. Mix until the dough comes together.

4

Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, you can use a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment to knead the dough for about 5–6 minutes.

5

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

6

After the first rise, punch the dough down to release air. Shape the dough into either a standard loaf, individual rolls, or a wreath shape, as desired. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet or in a loaf pan, then cover and let it rise again for 30–45 minutes.

7

Preheat your oven to 375Β°F (190Β°C).

8

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and 1 tablespoon of water to create the egg wash. Brush it over the surface of the dough.

9

Bake the bread for 20–25 minutes (or until golden brown and the internal temperature reads 190Β°F/88Β°C in the center).

10

Remove the bread from the oven and transfer it to a wire rack to cool. Serve warm or at room temperature.
