Discover the timeless charm of Mrs. MacNab’s Scones, a classic British recipe perfected for golden, buttery goodness. These light and tender scones are made with simple pantry staples like all-purpose flour, cold cubed butter, and whole milk, ensuring a soft crumb and delicate rise. The key lies in gently rubbing the butter into the dry ingredients and avoiding overworking the dough, creating a perfectly fluffy texture. With a golden egg-wash finish, they bake in just 12 minutes, making them a quick yet impressive treat. Serve them warm, slathered with jam and clotted cream, for an authentic afternoon tea experience or a cozy breakfast indulgence. Ideal for scone enthusiasts, this recipe balances tradition with approachable simplicity.
Preheat your oven to 220°C (428°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Work quickly to avoid warming the butter.
Create a well in the center of the mixture and gradually pour in the milk. Mix gently with a spoon or your hands until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overwork it.
Lightly flour a clean surface and turn the dough out onto it. Gently pat the dough into a round shape about 2.5 cm (1 inch) thick. Avoid using a rolling pin to keep the scones light.
Using a round cutter (around 6 cm in diameter), cut out scones from the dough. Press the cutter straight down without twisting to ensure an even rise. Re-roll the scraps and cut out additional scones.
Place the scones on the prepared baking tray, leaving a little space between them. Beat the egg and brush the tops of the scones lightly with the egg wash for a golden finish.
Bake in the preheated oven for 10–12 minutes or until the scones are well risen and golden brown.
Remove from the oven and transfer to a wire rack to cool slightly. Serve warm with jam and clotted cream or butter.
