Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 0.75 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 pieces hamburger buns
  • 3 tablespoons butter, optional (for toasting buns)

Directions

Step 1

Heat a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up into small pieces with a wooden spoon.

Step 3

Drain any excess grease from the skillet and return it to the heat.

Step 4

Stir in the chopped onion and green bell pepper. Cook for 3-4 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened.

Step 5

Add the ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, brown sugar, paprika, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Stir to combine everything well.

Step 6

Reduce the heat to low and simmer the mixture for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 7

While the sloppy joe mixture is simmering, optionally butter the inside of each hamburger bun and lightly toast them in another skillet or under the broiler.

Step 8

Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom half of each bun, then top with the other half.

Step 9

Serve immediately and enjoy!
