Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the Italian sausage and cook, breaking it into bite-sized pieces, until browned and cooked through, about 8 minutes. Remove the sausage and set aside.
In the same skillet, add the olive oil. Once hot, add the sliced bell peppers and onion. Sauté for 5-7 minutes until softened and slightly caramelized.
Add the minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for 1 minute until fragrant.
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, crushed red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and black pepper. Mix well and bring the sauce to a simmer.
