Warm, aromatic, and utterly comforting, Greek Meat Sauce Kima is a rich and flavorful dish that brings classic Mediterranean flavors straight to your kitchen. This hearty meat sauce, simmered with ground beef, fragrant spices like cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg, and a splash of dry red wine, is the ultimate comfort food. Enhanced with tomato paste, diced tomatoes, and a touch of sweetness from sugar, this sauce develops a perfectly balanced flavor profile over its slow simmer. Served over pasta, rice, or roasted vegetables, Kima is a versatile and satisfying dish thatβs both easy to make and deeply satisfying. Perfect for family dinners or meal prepping, this recipe delivers traditional Greek comfort with every bite. Donβt forget to garnish with fresh parsley for a pop of color and freshness!
Heat the olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed pot or deep skillet over medium heat.
Add the finely chopped onion and sautΓ© for 5β7 minutes, or until softened and golden brown.
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute, being careful not to let it burn.
Add the ground beef to the pot, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Cook for 7β10 minutes, or until fully browned.
Push the meat to the side and add the cinnamon stick, ground allspice, ground cloves, and ground nutmeg. Toast the spices for about 1 minute to release their aroma.
Mix the tomato paste into the pot and cook for 2 minutes, allowing it to slightly caramelize.
Stir in the canned diced tomatoes, red wine, and beef broth, scraping any browned bits from the bottom of the pot.
Add the bay leaves, sugar, dried oregano, ground black pepper, and salt. Stir to combine.
Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover partially with a lid and cook for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. If the sauce becomes too thick, add up to 1/2 cup of water as needed.
Taste the sauce and adjust seasonings, adding more salt or spices if desired.
Remove and discard the cinnamon stick and bay leaves.
Serve the Kima sauce over your choice of pasta, rice, or roasted vegetables. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
