Elevate your breakfast routine with Dairy-Free Sathumavu Puttu, a wholesome and nutrient-packed twist on the traditional South Indian steamed dish. Made with Sathumavu maavu, a multi-grain flour blend rich in fiber and nutrients, this recipe is entirely dairy-free, making it perfect for vegan or lactose-intolerant diets. The moist, crumbly texture is achieved by carefully incorporating water, ensuring the puttu steams to perfection. Layered with freshly grated coconut for a burst of natural sweetness and aroma, and prepared using a puttu steamer, this dish offers a light yet satisfying start to your day. Pair it with your favorite dairy-free curry, chutney, or sliced bananas for a deliciously balanced meal thatβs healthy and flavorful. Simple to prepare in just 25 minutes, Dairy-Free Sathumavu Puttu is an ideal choice for busy mornings or a wholesome snack.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the Sathumavu maavu (multi-grain flour) and salt.
Gradually add water to the flour mixture, mixing gently with your fingers as you go. The goal is to achieve a moist, crumbly texture similar to wet sand. Ensure there are no lumps, and the mixture is evenly moist.
Take a handful of the mixture and gently press it in your fist; it should hold its shape then crumble with a slight push. This is the correct texture for steaming. Adjust water if necessary.
Prepare the puttu steamer by adding water to the base and bringing it to a boil.
In the cylindrical part of the steamer, layer 2 tablespoons of grated coconut at the bottom. Then add a layer of the moist flour mixture about an inch thick. Repeat the layers, ending with a layer of grated coconut.
Cover and place the cylindrical steamer over the base with boiling water, allowing it to cook for about 10-15 minutes on medium high heat.
When steam starts appearing from the top of the steamer, and the puttu appears cooked, remove from heat.
Gently slide the cooked puttu onto a plate using the handle of a spoon or stick.
Serve hot with dairy-free vegetable curry, banana, or any chutney of your choice.
