Whether you're hosting a celebration or craving a comforting indulgence, this quick and easy puri recipe will transport your taste buds straight to the streets of India!
In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt.
Add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil to the flour mixture.
Gradually add water, little by little, mixing and kneading to form a firm yet smooth dough. You may not need all of the water, so add it as needed.
Once the dough is ready, cover it with a clean damp cloth and let it rest for about 10 minutes.
After resting, knead the dough again briefly to ensure a smooth texture.
Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and roll each portion into a smooth ball.
Flatten each ball slightly and roll it out into a 3-inch diameter circle using a rolling pin. Avoid dusting with flour. If needed, grease the rolling surface with a tiny bit of oil.
Heat the oil for deep frying in a deep skillet or wok over medium-high heat until it is near its smoking point.
Test the oil by dropping a small piece of dough into it. If it sizzles and rises immediately, the oil is ready.
Carefully slide one rolled puri into the hot oil. It should puff up within a few seconds. Gently press the puri with a slotted spoon and splash some hot oil on top to help it puff up.
Once the puri is golden brown, flip it and cook the other side for about 30 seconds until it achieves the same color.
Remove the puri with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
Repeat the frying process with the remaining puris.
Serve hot with your choice of accompaniment such as curry, chutney, or yogurt.
