Indulge in the comforting flavors of these flaky, golden-brown Beef and Cabbage Turnovers, a delightful handheld meal perfect for lunch, dinner, or an on-the-go snack. Packed with a savory filling of seasoned ground beef, tender green cabbage, and aromatic garlic and onion, these turnovers are wrapped in buttery puff pastry for an irresistible crunch. A dash of paprika adds a warm, smoky depth to the filling, while an egg wash ensures a beautifully crisp and glossy crust. Quick and easy to prepare with pre-made puff pastry, these turnovers are baked to perfection in just 25 minutes. Serve them fresh from the oven for a satisfying, crowd-pleasing dish that captures the essence of classic comfort food.
Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Finely chop the onion and garlic, and shred the cabbage into thin strips.
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until softened, about 3 minutes.
Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, about 5 minutes.
Stir in the cabbage, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Cook for an additional 4-5 minutes, until the cabbage is softened. Remove from heat and let the filling cool slightly.
Roll out the pre-made puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Cut each sheet into 4 equal squares (for a total of 8).
Spoon 2-3 tablespoons of the beef and cabbage mixture onto the center of each square, leaving a border around the edges.
In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to create an egg wash.
Brush the edges of each pastry square with the egg wash. Fold the pastry over the filling to create a triangle, and press the edges together firmly to seal. Use a fork to crimp the edges.
Transfer the turnovers to the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with the remaining egg wash for a golden finish.
Using a sharp knife, cut a small slit on the top of each turnover to allow steam to escape.
Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the turnovers are golden brown and puffed.
Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
