Ingredients

  • 500 g Ground beef (80% lean)
  • 250 g Ground pork
  • 100 g Breadcrumbs
  • 50 g Grated Parmesan cheese
  • 60 ml Milk
  • 2 pieces Large eggs
  • 2 tbsp Fresh parsley (finely chopped)
  • 4 pieces Garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1.5 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Black pepper
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • 800 g San Marzano tomatoes (canned, whole)
  • 2 tbsp Tomato paste
  • 6 pieces Fresh basil leaves (chopped)
  • 1 tsp Dried oregano
  • 1 tsp Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 tsp Red chili flakes (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, milk, eggs, parsley, half the minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until the ingredients are evenly incorporated.

Step 2

Using your hands, shape the meat mixture into evenly sized meatballs, about 1.5 inches in diameter. Place them on a plate or tray and set aside.

Step 3

In a large skillet or saucepan, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches (avoid overcrowding) and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, turning carefully, until browned all over. Remove the browned meatballs and set aside on a plate.

Step 4

Using the same skillet, add the remaining minced garlic and sauté over medium heat until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add the tomato paste, stirring constantly, and cook for another minute.

Step 5

Pour the canned San Marzano tomatoes into the skillet and break them up with a wooden spoon. Stir in the fresh basil, dried oregano, sugar, and red chili flakes if using. Season the sauce with additional salt and pepper to taste.

Step 6

Bring the sauce to a simmer, then gently add the browned meatballs back into the skillet, nestling them into the sauce. Lower the heat to medium-low, cover, and let the meatballs cook in the sauce for 30-35 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 7

Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve the meatballs and sauce hot, garnished with extra fresh basil and grated Parmesan cheese if desired. Pair with pasta, crusty bread, or a simple green salad for a complete meal.
