Place chicken breasts between two pieces of plastic wrap and pound with a meat mallet or rolling pin until the chicken is about 1/2-inch thick.
Season both sides of the chicken breasts with salt and black pepper.
Set up a breading station with three shallow dishes: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with a mixture of breadcrumbs and grated Parmesan cheese.
Dredge each chicken breast first in the flour, then dip in the egg, and finally coat in the breadcrumb and Parmesan mixture. Press lightly to adhere the coating.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the breaded chicken breasts and cook for 3β4 minutes on each side until golden brown and fully cooked (the internal temperature should reach 165Β°F).
Reduce the heat to low. Spoon marinara sauce over the top of each chicken breast and sprinkle evenly with shredded mozzarella cheese.
Cover the skillet with a lid and cook for 2β3 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Remove from heat and garnish with fresh basil leaves, if desired. Serve immediately with pasta, salad, or crusty bread.
